Hulya Canbakal - Distribution of Wealth in the Ottoman Empire (16th-19th centuries)

Despite lively debates among economic historians since the 19th century, the relationship between the distribution of wealth and economic growth and modernization remains an unsettled question. This project builds on these debates and examines the patterns of distribution in different regions of the empire and the changes in these patterns that occurred over time. Analysis of regional differences takes into consideration the role of institutional, political as well as natural factors in shaping disparities of wealth and time series analysis traces the likely impact of medium term economic waves as well as of long-term trends. The project is supported by a TUBITAK Research Grant.
